Thinking Skills – NSW Selective High School Test

Sharpen your logic, reasoning, and problem-solving skills with HeyLearno’s Thinking Skills practice tests and selective exam preparation.

About Selective Thinking Skills Test

The Thinking Skills component of the NSW Selective High School Placement Test measures your child’s ability to think critically, logically, and analytically. It evaluates how students reason with information, make deductions, and solve complex problems. This test focuses on reasoning ability and comprehension rather than memorisation. Students are assessed on how well they can evaluate arguments, draw logical conclusions, and identify patterns or relationships between ideas.

Thinking Skills Categories

Category Description Example Question How to Approach
Critical Thinking & Argument Analysis Evaluate assumptions, arguments, and conclusions to judge reasoning strength. Identify flawed logic, detect bias, and assess evidence quality. “The author claims that eating breakfast improves memory. Which statement, if true, most weakens this claim?” Identify the conclusion, find evidence used to support it, and look for statements that contradict or weaken the reasoning.
Logical & Deductive Reasoning Use conditional statements and logical rules to infer conclusions. Solve ‘if–then’ and sequence-based problems systematically. “If all dolphins are mammals and some mammals live in the ocean, which of the following must be true?” Break down the statements into logical parts, apply elimination, and test each option against the conditions.
Quantitative & Analytical Reasoning Apply mathematical reasoning to pattern-based or ratio problems. Tests analytical logic rather than raw arithmetic skills. “A shop sells pencils in packs of 4 and pens in packs of 3. How many packs are needed to buy exactly 18 items?” Translate into equations, identify relationships, and use logical reasoning to find the valid combination.
Pattern & Sequence Reasoning Recognise relationships and predict next items in sequences of numbers, letters, or symbols. “Find the next number in the sequence: 2, 6, 12, 20, ?” Look for patterns in differences or ratios and test arithmetic or geometric rules.
Spatial & Visual Reasoning Solve puzzles by mentally rotating or reflecting shapes, identifying missing figures, and analysing visual patterns. “Which figure completes the pattern?” Visualise rotations, check for symmetry, and eliminate inconsistent options.
Analytical Puzzles & Constraint Logic Multi-clue puzzles involving seating, matching, or scheduling problems that require step-by-step deduction. “Amy, Ben, and Cara sit in a row. Amy is not next to Ben. Who must sit in the middle?” Write down all possibilities, apply each clue logically, and eliminate invalid options.

How to Improve — Focused, Practical Strategies

Boost your Thinking Skills with focused strategies. Consistent practice helps tackle Selective Thinking Skills questions confidently.

1. Practice Daily

Short, focused daily reasoning drills improve accuracy and timing.

2. Analyze Mistakes

Understand why an answer was wrong. Reflect and apply the correct logic next time.

3. Time Management

Simulate real test conditions by practising under a timer.

4. Step-by-Step Thinking

Break down complex puzzles into smaller, manageable logical steps.

5. Focus on Weak Areas

Identify challenging areas like pattern or logic puzzles and revisit them often.

6. Review & Reflect

After each practice session, review solutions, note strategies that worked, and adjust your approach.

Common Mistakes & Quick Fixes

  • Rushing through questions: Read carefully and restate the question in your own words.
  • Misreading patterns: Highlight key numbers or shapes and analyse systematically.
  • Skipping logical steps: Write every step to avoid confusion.
  • Overcomplicating reasoning: Try simple logic before advanced deductions.
  • Not checking answers: Always verify reasoning and look for alternative solutions.
